1. What is popular culture, and what does it mean to you?
Pop culture is the impact that the latest trends have on us. To me, pop culture plays a very important part in the world today. Everyone wants to have the best and newest thing out there. Recent popular culture artifacts can even help people communicate and stay in touch, help students learn, or even allow employees to access important information. There are many different benefits to today's popular culture and with the constantly updating technology today, hopefully popular culture artifacts will be able to do even more.
2. Why is an understanding of popular culture relevant to you in a
business environment and in your present and future career?
An understanding of popular culture is relevant in a business environment because every company needs to be able to market itself to its consumers. Understanding how to reach those consumers and what makes up their popular culture can help to increase profits. Likewise, not taking advantage of learning about the current trends can possibly decrease profits for a company. I currently work at a hospital as a Pharmacy Technician. In order to access a patient's medication lists, we use fingerprint technology. I believe if we didn't have more updated technology in the hospital, many privacy laws could be broken with people accessing a patient's records inappropriately.
3. What would you consider to be an example of a pop culture artifact?
And why would you choose it?
I consider the television show The Walking Dead to be an example of a pop culture artifact. The Walking Dead is a television show on AMC about a zombie apocalypse. Although zombies aren't real (hopefully!), this show does a lot more than just teaching people how to kill a zombie. It shows how important relationships are and the importance of having rules in order to survive. It is currently in its third season and is the most watched series on cable television for adults.

I love your artifact, it is one of my favorite shows! It is so popular right now because zombies for some reason are a big deal. There is an after show and there are discussion boards for the show as well. It is wild how so many people can become so connected with a show about zombies. I just watch it for pure entertainment, it is great acting.
ReplyDeleteYou make great points about how if a company does not know what is trending it can hurt that company. That is so true, some people have a tendency of not liking change and it takes a toll on the company.
Thanks,
Heidi Reese
I have to say that I really like your artifact as well. I work during the times this show is on but I have heard that it is very good. I have asked my to record this for me to watch but she does not like zombies. I like what you are doing with the finger printing at the hospital. With all the new restricted laws it is very important that the correct people are getting the information. My dad just filed for social security and was sent some other gentleman's complete information. If companies do not stay on top of current trends then they will lose business to other companies for sure.
ReplyDeleteI also love you artifact. I have watched this show since the beginning and never miss an episode. I even record it, whether I miss it or not. For Andrew, if you have Netflix, they have the first two seasons available for online streaming. It's very cool how you are doing the finger printing. I know one time while at the e.r. a nurse walked in with a giant needle and asked my birthday....she said "Oops
ReplyDelete! Wrong room"! That could have been really bad. Well done.
I really enjoy your artifact and i would agree with you in the fact that this show is not all about killing zombies and it shows you how different relationships and how people work together who come from different backgrounds. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed you blog, It's a show that I have never watched, yet now your blog interest me to want to see the show.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog so far! I almost said Walking Dead too, been watching it since the first episode, great show!
